ElderNet Strategic Plan – Summary

ElderNet Strategic Plan – Summary

ElderNet is a 50-year-old nonprofit dedicated to supporting Lower Montgomery County elders and disabled adults in need, who wish to remain in their homes. In spring of 2025, ElderNet reached out to RSVP’s Volunteer Executive Consultants (VEC), for help with strategic planning. VEC provides free consulting and educational services to nonprofits. Using the planning process led by VEC, ElderNet chose to create a rigorous plan to set the organization’s direction. It was an effective team effort. The Strategic Plan covers a 5-year outlook with goals spread over the first 3 years. Our plan is both aspirational and actionable.

The planning process started with in-depth research to assess ElderNet’s capabilities in its marketspace. We benchmarked twenty-six different organizations locally and nationally with comparable missions. Our service suite is better than similar organizations. We did take ideas for a broader range of services for our participants, and to improve our visibility in the surrounding communities.

Using the benchmarking for comparison, we conducted unbiased assessments of our core programs—Volunteer Services, Food Pantry, and Care Management—as well as internal functions including Marketing/Visibility, Board Governance, and Staff Development. Our current operation is very solid, while we recognized areas for continuous improvement including service expansion.

The next research area was to apply Core Competencies: the key areas where we do better than our peer organizations. These include volunteer program excellence, a highly effective food pantry model, personalized care management, deep community knowledge, free integrated service delivery, and a values-driven organizational culture.

With this research in mind, we analyzed current and potential alliance organizations where our core competencies could blend with theirs to create more comprehensive and holistic services than we could do alone. We reviewed our eighteen current alliances and identified an additional eight that could be of strategic value.

We articulated our overarching intents:

Service Excellence

Continuously improving quality, consistency, and participant outcomes across all programs.

Visibility

Expanding recognition beyond our historic service area through community partnerships, outreach, and networking.

Gradual Growth

Expanding services and geography intentionally, balancing demand with organizational capacity. Growth will be both organic and through strategic alliances.

Financial Strength and Stability – consistent fundraising practices, internal controls, and long-term sustainability.

Process Improvement – defining, measuring, and refining repeatable processes that support excellence and accountability.

The needs of the elders and disabled are growing more complex, and expectations for accountability, sustainability, and impact are increasing. Our Strategic Plan positions ElderNet to respond effectively to these challenges while preserving the values, relationships, and mission that have sustained the organization for five decades.
